Use log for base-10 logarithm: log(100) = 2. Use ln for natural logarithm (base e): ln(1) = 0 and ln(e) = 1. They're separate buttons because they answer different questions — mixing them up is the most common scientific-calculator mistake.
Press the cube-root button (marked with a small 3) for a direct cube root: cbrt(27) = 3. For any other root, use the y-root button — it inserts a fractional-exponent template, so entering 8, then y-root, then 3, computes 8^(1/3) = 2, the cube root of 8.
